An infrequent smoker and ER chief fooled everyone, until lung cancer hit

Gordon Everett isn’t here to speak for himself, but he really wanted people to know these things about his life:

He smoked only three cigarettes a day.

He smoked for only eight years of his 56-year life.

He thought he had strong lungs from his years as a champion gymnast. He thought he’d die of heart problems long before anything got his lungs.

He was a nurse and a medical manager who ran the emergency room at BayAreaHospital in CoosBay. It’s not as if he was ignorant; he knew smoking was dangerous. But he believed it wouldn’t get him, a man who smoked only three cigarettes a day to "de-stress."
