A local law to prohibit the use of all tobacco products, including smokeless ones, inside county offices goes to county legislators Wednesday.

Among the matters before the Board of Legislators at tomorrow’s meeting is a local law banning the use of tobacco products, ranging from cigarettes to chewing tobacco, inside county buildings. Smoking is already banned inside buildings although there are designated areas outside buildings where smoking is allowed.

Legislator George E. Joseph, R-10, Westmoreland, is pushing the measure as a health issue. He said work spaces ought to be completely tobacco-free, noting that the use of tobacco products carry serious health risks including lung, pancreatic and oral cancers.

The county Health Department would be the enforcement officer. In the event of repeated violations despite warnings, fines can be imposed on violators following a hearing. For the first violation, the fine is $50.
