Restore tobacco money – Greater Binghamton

December 31, 2009, 12:00 am

Our progress with youth prevention will see setbacks as a result of budget cuts. According to the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, the New York State Tobacco Control Program budget cut will result in a 1.3 percent increase in youth smoking rates, which means that 15,980 more New York kids will grow up to become addicted adult smokers and 5,110 kids will die prematurely from smoking.

Youth will continue to start smoking because of exposure to smoking in movies and tobacco advertisements in the retail environment unless stronger tobacco control policies are adopted to help protect them from a lifetime of addiction and early death. Maintaining funding for tobacco control is a wise and effective investment in the state’s health.
