Paterson proposes tax on soda, smokes to help fund next state budget

Gov. David Paterson this morning will propose a $134 billion budget to state legislators.

The plan includes $1 billion in tax and fee increases, including a $1 per pack increase in the cigarette tax and a new excise tax of about one penny per ounce on sugared beverages. The cigarette tax is expected to raise $218 million. The drink tax is expected to raise $465 million.
