Reynolds Loses Cigarette Case

A Vermont state judge ruled Wednesday that R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. made false and misleading marketing claims last decade to sell its Eclipse cigarette brand, in a case that highlighted a fierce debate over so-called reduced-harm cigarettes.

Vermont Superior Court Judge Dennis Pearson ruled that the second-largest U.S. cigarette maker, a unit of Reynolds American Inc., violated the state’s consumer-protection laws through advertisements that claimed Eclipse "may present less risk of cancer" and other diseases.
