Milk and water better choices

First published in print: Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Don’t want to pay a tax on sugary beverages? Don’t buy them. As a registered dietitian, I can assure you that sugary beverages are not necessary to sustain life. Really.

In fact, research shows that they, in more than occasional treat quantities, are harmful to health. They are strongly associated with obesity, dental caries and, because they replace milk in many children’s diets, osteoporosis later in life. People would benefit from drinking fewer sugary drinks.

We should be seeing this proposed tax as an opportunity to support New York dairy farmers by drinking more low-fat milk as we cut back on sugar-sweetened beverages. Water is also an excellent beverage choice; we have great tasting water in this state.

If we drink more of those and less of drinks consisting of sugar, water and flavoring, we would improve our bottom lines and our waistlines.
