Smoking cessation coverage to expand under the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act

The use of tobacco products is the single leading cause of preventable death in the United States today, killing 465,000 smokers each year and costing over $96 Billion each year in related medical costs. More lower income individuals smoke, 33% as compared to 20.6% of the total adult population. The annual medical expenses in the existing Medicaid program is $22 Billion each year which is 11% of the all Medicaid costs.
