Obesity fears kill Coca-Cola proposal

Citing childhood obesity concerns, the Syracuse Common Council this week rejected a school district proposal to contract with Coca-Cola Bottling Co. for exclusive pouring rights in city schools.

The deal, which would have brought in about $120,000 a year, included stipulations about when and where high-calorie sodas and drinks could be available to students, but it wasn’t enough to convince the majority of councilors.

"Our kids are 10 pounds heavier, on average, today than they were 10 years ago," Republican Councilor Ryan McMahon said, explaining his opposition before the Monday vote.
